Build toilet for Mang Rao primary school – Kon Tum

SEN is pleased to announce the completion of another project with the kind support and connection of our friends. In September 2019 we first visited and worked with the local authorities and Education Department in Dak Glei District, Kon Tum Province to explore an opportunity to support their charity activities here. After surveying some locations including the Mang Rao Primary School belonging to the Vo Thi Sau main primary school, we found that there were no toilet or washroom facilities at the location, at considerable inconvenience for the students and teachers here.

Located 185km from Da Nang city and 4.5 hours travel time over the mountain roads to get there, Mang Rao school was built before 2006 to serve the surrounding area, with 3 mixed classrooms from grade 1 to grade 5 with 41 students (ethnic De Trieng) and 3 teachers. In general, the teaching equipment meets basic requirements, however classrooms are now slightly degraded over time.

After conducting surveys and undertaking detailed work together with the local authorities, the Education Department and the Headmaster of Vo Thi Sau School, SEN created a plan to construct a toilet facility for the Mang Rao school. Construction commenced in June 2020 with a duration of 5 weeks to build the new facility.

SEN sponsored the design and building of the new facilities incorporating 5 cubicles, 1 urinal area, 1 handwashing area, and 1 drill well with a pump and a water tower. In addition to this, SEN also provided the classrooms with wall clocks and window and door curtains in order to help manage the sunlight levels and provide a better environment for the children, and donated many different storybooks for the students, giving them the opportunity to expand their knowledge and improve their Vietnamese language. Children in the region often communicate with each other and their families using their ethnic language, so the opportunity to learn will benefit them. Gifts including biscuits / candies / milk drinks were prepared for each student at the opening of the new facilities which was held on September 23rd, 2020. The hand-over ceremony for the school was attended by the SEN Charity together with representatives of the school, the students, parents, the authorities, and the construction contractor.

Responding to the call to help provide students with a green, clean, and improved environment, the school have since then taken the initiative to coordinate with the local authorities and students’ parents to contribute materials and workdays to cement the schoolyard and create a new pathway into the classroom.
